EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
