The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.
This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.
His child, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of the former president's transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
